Brave Light Library is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide parents with tools to start talking with kids about race, identity, and justice by using monthly book selections to launch those conversations.

There are no “right” or “wrong” ways to talk about race with our kids. We know we will get it "wrong" sometimes (or often), get stumped, and wish we had some takebacks. While we may feel unprepared or a little anxious, there is no expert who is going to show up and do it for us.

If we show up and try our best to start these important conversations, we can do our part to raise the next generation of “bright lights,” racially conscious and socially aware kids who will reimagine the way our world works. So let’s start talking to our kids and continue to share with this community our questions, successes, reflections, and epic failures along the way.

Who We Are

Michelle

I am Chinese American, a civil rights attorney, and the mom to three multiracial kids 6 and under. I want my kids to grow up with a strong sense of self and racial identity, to feel comfortable having these conversations and questions, and to know and fight for justice. I’m excited to learn alongside this community about how to initiate these important conversations with our kids.

Sara

I am a white woman who has spent the last fifteen years in public education as a former teacher, school social worker, and administrator. My husband (who is Ghanaian-American) and I are parents to three kids 6 and under.

Our hope is to raise joyful, proud Black children, who are deeply connected to their Ghanaian roots. Over time, we hope to help them explore and embrace the complexity of a multiracial identity and develop a strong sense of their individual, communal, and historic place…AND teach them how to make some “good trouble” along the way!
